WARRINGTON Anglers' Association's contribution to National Give Angling A Go week involves a beginners' day at Red Lane on the Bridgewater Canal.

A National Federation of Anglers coach will be providing free tuition on Wednesday. It is open to anyone who is just starting fishing or keen to have a go.

Mums or dads with youngsters who want to go fishing but haven't a clue where to start, this is for you! Taken early retirement and looking for a new hobby - come along and have a go.

There will be fishing tackle available on loan and also a limited number of Environment Agency licences if you or anyone you know would be interested in taking part. Ring 01928 716238 and reserve a place.

There has been a report from our landlord at Loton Park on the River Severn that some anglers camped by the river last weekend. This is not allowed on our waters under any circumstances and could lose us a fishery.

As reported last week the River Wyre at Garstang has received some attention. Our bailiff reports the river is still in good form with plenty of small chub as well as better fish to 4lbs. Trout, eels and a salmon of 15lbs were taken on the opposite bank last week.

Please note there is to be a charity raft race along the river on August 29 so inevitably there will be some disturbance on that day.

Tench to 2lbs and bream to 5lbs have been reported at Sandiway. Moore Quarry boasts some good nets of roach with plenty of tench in the margins. Top bay is currently favourite.

Grey Mist is still producing tench and carp in good numbers. One of our junior members, Paul Molphy, enjoyed some success with a mirror of 15lbs last week. His younger brother Chris, despite having lost the use of his right arm, has also caught some very nice perch.

Although he has found it difficult, Chris has persevered and his mum would like to hear from any angler who has a similar disability and could perhaps offer advice or information about tackle or gadgets available which would help him.

Saturday saw the 10th annual NatWest Young Angler match held at Ackers Pits. The weather was kind for a change and a good afternoon was had by all.

There was a prize for everyone taking part as well as a snacks and a goody bag. The five to 10 years group was won by Andrew Lewis. 1lb 13ozs 0drms, second was Richard Lenihan, 1-0-0.

The 11-15 years section was won by Michael Lythgoe with a nice net of roach and small carp on bronze maggot, 11-6-0. Second was Craig Lowndes, 5-7-6.

Seven-year-old Robert Conroy won the bailiffs' trophy for the youngest angler and gave his dad a few more grey hairs in the process.

Appleton Reservoir is still on reasonable form - rod average 1.9, best bag seven trout.

Secretary Frank Lythgoe can be contacted with information and catch reports on 01928 716238, fax 01928 713898 or E-mail: info@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52 Parker Street open as usual tonight, Friday.
