SUBSTITUTE Chris Lightfoot proved to be the key to wrapping up Crewe's first three points in the new campaign.
Barnsley, aiming to bounce back after losing their Premiership relegation fight, were quickly behind. James Collins, making his first league debut, was unceremoniously brought down in the area by Van der Laan to give the Alex a third minute penalty and skipper, Shaun Smith, made no mistake from the spot.
The lone goal was sufficient to give the Alex the half time lead but early pressure after the interval came from Barnsley and nine minutes in McClare beat Kearton with a strong shot for the equaliser.
An injury to Unsworth brought Lightfoot on as his replacement and as things turned out he was to prove the match winner.
Much work has been done on set pieces in training and it paid off when, following a free kick taken by Wright, Lightfoot headed home after 69 minutes.
Spurred on by that goal Crewe surged forward. Yet another free kick enabled them to go further ahead when it was met by Dave Walton, still awaiting his first league goal. His effort came back off the bar and was slotted home by "super sub" Chris Lightfoot.
