A CAR dealer looks set to win permission to build a new business on land which young gymnasts had hoped would be theirs.

The land on Macon Way in Crewe was formerly the Homeleigh Day Care Centre, which has now been demolished.

Planning officers are recommending the plans to build a car dealership for LC Charles are approved today, Thursday.

But members of the Cheshire Academy for Integrated Sport and Arts have been hoping they would be able to build a new respite centre on the land.

Director Iain Chalmers said a covenant was placed on part of the land in 1969 which stated it could only be used for a home or respite centre for children with special needs.

He has objected to the plans for the new building, along with some residents.

He said: "The development will cause more congestion on this road, in the vicinity of the fire station.

"Double yellow lines currently extend only half way down the site. Should the application be approved, I would expect the council to take responsibility for ensuring that the double yellow lines are extended much further before the business opens."

The highway authority has asked for the developer to create a pedestrian crossing on Macon Way at its Crewe Road end.

Planning officers are recommending approval and calling for soundproofing and acoustic screening to be added to the workshop.

They said: "Whilst the Cheshire Academy would like to acquire the site for expansion, it is not the role of the planning process to prevent alternative development which would prejudice their aims.

"Permission can only be withheld on valid planning grounds. Covenant control lies outside the planning process."
