A SUSPECTED vigilante yesterday demolished a public toilet which had become notorious as a meeting place for homosexuals.
The sun-tanned man drove a forklift truck across the Heath, then through the brick building in Northwich Road.
Commuters arriving in Knutsford were astonished to see a gaping hole in the side of the Northwich Road toilets.
Earlier the driver - clad in a white T-shirt and baseball cap - had used the dumper-style truck to uproot the barrier to the Heath near Tabley Road.
He'd then ploughed across the Heath, swung the truck around - and driven into the side wall of the men's toilets.
He'd then driven off - towards Tatton Park.
Yesterday (Tuesday) police refused to speculate on the motive.
"We can't define a motive yet," said Inspector Stuart Warmisham. "We can guess, but we are keeping an open mind."
A spokesman for Macclesfield Borough Council said the damage had left the toilets in a state of collapse.
"The damage runs into thousands of pounds," the spokesman confirmed.
"And we will be taking steps to find the culprit. It's damage to public property."
