THERE was a desperately tight battle for Widnes Golf Club's President's Putter when five players were locked together on a three-under-par score of 66.
The prestigious honour eventually went to long-standing member, John Wilson, who off a handicap of 11, went round a course made testing by fast greens in 77 strokes. He edged out Ralph Jackson (85-19=66) on a card play-off.
Gordon Axford who posted identical 77-11=66 figures as the winner took third place and also collected the senior's prize from president, Chris Dunne, who commiserated with the other two players to finish on 66, Steve Ashall and Bill McCann.
Widnes also hosted on Saturday an Inaugural Triangular competition against teams from two of their new sponsors, Mainland and Micro Milling.
The home team of 12 players were firmly put to the sword, collecting only half a point as Micro Milling edged out a Mainland team which included Birchwood touring professional Derrick Cooper 4.5 points to 4.
Better luck for Widnes came in the Eric Fisher Memorial Trophy at Woolton - an event for teams of six containing three senior members and three juniors.
The Widnes line-up of John Atherton, Merv Jones, Gordon Roberts, Ian Ratcliffe, Gareth Roberts and David Butler came out on top with an aggregate of 84 from their two best fourball scores.
