LESS than one in ten shoppers from across the borough choose Congleton for their clothes, furniture and electrical goods, a new survey has revealed.

Congleton accounts for just seven per cent of non-food shopping of people within the borough, only one per cent more than the number of locals who shop in Chester.

Crewe is the main attraction for non-food shopping for borough residents, attracting 26 per cent, ahead of Stoke with 18 per cent.

One in ten travel to Macclesfield, eight per cent go to Hanley, and seven per cent shop in Manchester.

Congleton fares better, however, in the grocery stakes, with more than one in four of borough housewives doing their weekly grocery shopping in the town.

Some 28 per cent of borough residents do their main food shop in the town, while a further 16 per cent choose Sandbach for their grocery shopping.

However one in ten travel to Crewe to get their groceries, a further eight per cent also go outside the borough to Northwich.

Seven per cent go to Stoke, five per cent drive to Macclesfield, while Alsager accounts for six per cent of the total.

The household survey was carried out by the South and East Cheshire Training and Enterprise Council, and asked people about their shopping habits.
