A TRIBUTE to Diana, Princess of Wales, will be unveiled in Crewe next week to commemorate the first anniversary of her death.
A hand carved stone plaque of Diana's face will be unveiled by the mayor of Crewe and Nantwich, Councillor Ray Stafford, as it goes on public display for the first time.
The plaque, which took local mason Chris Weedall three weeks to carve, recently won first prize in the International Stone Show at Wembley.
"I have always wanted to carve a portrait and who better than Diana," said Chris.
"She was, and is still, loved by millions of people. It was difficult to get just the right look in her eyes and facial features but I'm pleased with the end result."
The mayor will display the plaque in the foyer of the building at 10am on Tuesday, and a book of condolence will also be opened all week for members of the public to sign.
"I am very proud that a local man has achieved such perfection in what is a very specialised field," he said.
"This week is a particularly sad occasion as many of us remember the tragic events of this time last year. Therefore I am pleased that the plaque of Diana will be on show in the Municipal Buildings to provide a focal point."
