STEVE ROSE won the top division of Widnes Golf Club's autumn meeting on Saturday, the 10-handicapper going round in 74 strokes to win by a shot from three other golfers who recorded nett 65s.
Gareth Roberts, playing off seven, was the best of that trio, edging out John Caulfield and Mervyn Jones on a card play-off.
Jones, however, claimed overall victory in the battle for the club's Council Prize which incorporates results from the Spring and Summer meetings.
His 12 points for second place gave him an aggregate score of 36, nine better that Rose who picked up 14 for Saturday's first pace.
The competition is divided into two handicap groups and Quentin Lewis enhanced an already successful year by winning Division Two with a score of 75-13=62.
That total just pipped Jeff Harding (79-17=62) on countback with Bert Robinson third two shots further adrift.
Overall honours in that section went to Tony Dunne who picked up only two points on Saturday for his score of 72, but had enough to spare from the two previous competitions to hold off Lewis's late challenge.
Widnes also staged a Bank Holiday mixed competition on Monday - a greensome event which produced some exceptional scores.
Vin and Lynne Jackson were the narrowest of winners with a nett score of 62.2 against the 62.6 posted by Dave and Beryl Trehy.
Bob and Norma Phillips finished third with 65.8.
