Winsford Utd 2 Leigh RMI 0

UniBond Premier Division

THE deadly duo of Winnie Steele and Steve Shaughnessy struck two clinical goals either side of half-time to continue Winsford's promising start to the season.

The Saturday night table showed Winsford sitting at the top of the UniBond Premier after this, their second home win of the week.

Considering Leigh were the only side to do the league double over Winsford last season, this was a comfortable win for the Blues, with the defence as awesome as ever.

At the other end, the form of manager Dalton Steele's nephew and assistant boss suggests he may be thinking about abandoning his search for another striker to strengthen the ranks.

Winnie Steele followed up his effort against Altrincham with his second of the campaign on the stroke of half-time.

He chased a long ball through the middle and somehow managed to shake off Leigh's defensive giant Simon Turpin before steadying himself to lash a volley into the roof of the net.

It was the perfect end to a half which saw United on the attack from start to finish.

In the first minute Colin Lambert swung over a cross to the far post, where Paul Wheeler had sneaked in unmarked. His looping header was tipped over by David Felgate.

Leigh, who finished third last year, had their best moment on 17 minutes when Keith Evans escaped the defence but was unable to beat Andy Oakes, who pulled off a fine stop.

A minute later Shaughnessy volleyed a cross from Steele over the bar from eight yards then missed his kick completely when Aspinall put him clear in the area.

But he made amends by scoring the inevitable second on 71 minutes.

Eddie Hussin, who looked fully fit and back to his best, lobbed a high ball into the visitors' half which found Shaughnessy with the whole field to run into.

The ball seemed to take forever to come down for him but when it did he hit a stunning low shot across Felgate to open his account for the season and wrap up a well-earned three points.

Winsford: Oakes, German, Heesom, Came, Talbot, Wheeler, Hussin (Hibbert 87 mins), Lambert, Shaughnessy (Barnes 90), Steele, Aspinall.

Attendance: 195.

Man of the match: Colin Lambert.
