The 20-year-old Cuddington driver had a nightmare qualifying session which left him 12th on the grid for the main race. He recovered in the race to finish in sixth spot.
But he admitted afterwards his chances of winning the championship had gone: "It is still mathematically possible, but not realistic. I just hope I can win at Oulton next week."
Buxton also suffered a set-back in his bid to win the Junior title. David Gibson, the driver he is vying with for the title, finished one place ahead of him at Brands to leave them level on points with three races remaining in the championship.
Buxton added: "If I keep qualifying 12th it will do me no good at all. My dad could well be getting a drive at Oulton, so that could help me.
"I'd love to win at Oulton."
