REPAIRS on the Widnes approach to the bridge started this week.
West Bank residents received letters, notifying them of the roadworks.
Contractors started painting the steelwork over the River Mersey on Tuesday.
The work is expected to last for 12 weeks.
A second programme of repairs to one of the supporting concrete piers close to West Bank primary school is due to begin in late October and last for eight weeks.
Alan West, assistant director highways and transportation at Halton Council, told residents in a letter: "Unfortunately, both contracts are likely to generate noise but this will be limited to daylight hours Monday to Saturday."
He said no lane closures on the road will be necessary as all the work will be carried out from underneath the structure.
