WARRINGTON Rugby Union club play the biggest game in their 75 year history tomorrow, Saturday.

They are gearing up to entertain the mighty Macclesfield in the first round of the National Tetley Bitter Cup at Bridge Lane, Appleton, kick-off 2.45pm.

The club's inclusion in Rugby Union's most prestigious cup event is the reward for last season's magnificent efforts which saw the first team promoted into the North West Leagues and two tremendous runs in the county cup competitions, losing to the eventual winners in both.

The close season has seen plenty of hard work for the players under the coaching of Kevin Greaves and his assistant Neil Jackson while chairman of rugby Peter Riley has worked hard to bring new players into the squad.

He said: "We've bolstered the pack by signing Stewart Edwards from Eagle and Dave Nicholls, the former captain of Winnington Park, while youngsters Eddie Fields and Alan Marsh will be in the coach's mind when he comes to select his team each week."

Warrington's final preparations for Saturday's game have gone well.

The first team won the Brian Drummond Trophy for the first time when they defeated Leigh by 25-14 on the opening day of the season.

Young hooker Paul Milligan was the inspiration behind the win, ably helped by props Stewart Coleman and Phil Griffiths.

Peter Holce, Eddie Fields and Richard Turner scored the tries while Andy James kicked two conversions and two penalties.

On Saturday a strong New Brighton team were defeated 32-12. The tries came from Lee Rushton, two, Ian Nicholson and Andy James, who also kicked three conversions and two penalties.

A trialist centre also caught the eye with a strong defensive display and some penetrative running.
