CENTENARY Sunday is set to be a superb occasion for Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club.
The 100th anniversary of their Wilderspool Stadium home is to be celebrated in style.
Wilderspool has been a solid rock for Wire and now the Wolves through good times and bad but Sunday is sure to be one of the enjoyable occasions.
It will be the supporters who will make the day. The Warrington Wolves versus Huddersfield Giants Super League game should have a unique atmosphere with supporters being asked to wear fancy dress on a centenary theme and to make banners reflecting the Wolves' history. The best banner will win a ground season ticket for 1999.
Children will be allowed free entry to the game, which kicks off at 3pm. To gain free admittance at the turnstiles juniors will need the voucher from page 55 of today's edition of the GUARDIAN.
The Silcocks fun fair behind the Railway End stand will be open from approximately 10am to start the carnival procedings.
To kick-off the rugby, Warrington Wolves Academy team will be playing against Featherstone Rovers in the Super League curtain-raiser at 12.15pm.
Clowns, stilt walkers, face painters, gladiators games and the Wolverettes dancing troupe will be entertaining the crowds from 2pm onwards. The Granny Wolverettes, formed for the centenary milestone, will be dancing at half-time.
At around 2.40pm there will be a parade of Wilderspool's past palyers, hopefully including 91-year-old Bill Shankland who is believed to be the oldest surviving ex-Wire player. Bill is travelling from Poole in Dorset for the occasion. Past players should meet outside the sponsor's lounge, Priory Street, from 1.30pm.
After the game the partying will continue in the Touchdown Club for members. A karaoke is being planned for those in chorus mood.
Tonight, Friday a supporters' forum will take place at the Touchdown Tavern. Doors will open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. It is for adults only and the admission fee will be £2, which is to cover the cost of the centenary plaque which is to be mounted at the stadium.
Warrington coach Darryl Van de Velde, assistant coach Paul Cullen, skipper Danny Farrar and chief executive John Smith will form a panel to answer supporters' written questions.
There will also be a chance for supporters to view Rugby League memorabilia and to have their photograph taken with the Challenge Cup.
Tomorrow, Saturday, attention will be focused on the Cockhedge Theme Shop from 11am to 3pm. Centenary memorabilia such as polo shirts will be on sale. Current players will be on hand and there will be a display of pictures of Wilderspool players over the past 100 years. The Wolves' supporters club will have a stall outside of the shop and club historians will be there to give you any facts and figures you may wish to know from the club's history.
