SCHOOLS across the borough are to be encouraged to take up aluminium can recycling and boost their income at the same time.
The project was organised through the borough's Local Agenda 21 waste and Resources topic group.
Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling will pay just under a penny for every can collected, schools in other areas have earned more than £600.
Alcan have also set up a high profile recycling League with prizes for successful schools.
Schools must register their interest between now and October and will receive a free information pack with the necessary equipment.
Marie von Wurzbach, Alcan's Project officer, said: "We are pleased to be working with the borough council on this exciting new project. Alcan are keen to encourage recycling in schools and among young people."
Councillor Pam Minshull, the borough council's spokesperson on Local Agenda 21 said: "This project is a good opportunity to work with local schools helping to protect the environment."
