PEOPLE in Nantwich could be asked whether they would like the town to have its own mayor.
At present Nantwich has a Town Council Chairman, currently councillor Jean Pearson, who attends many civic events.
But town councillors have been considering the possibility of changing the title to Mayor.
Many feel it would give the office more dignity and be in Nantwich's best long term interests but some are against the move.
On Monday night councillors decided to let the people of Nantwich choose which title should be used and a vote could be held across the town.
Cllr Arthur Moran suggested holding a vote or referendum to find out local people's views and said: "If they say no, fair enough, if they say yes, we move forward.
"I don't think Nantwich should come second place to Crewe in the borough. "
Councillor Joyce Stockton said: "I think it is a very good idea, it would certainly give Nantwich more status if we had a town mayor.
"Several people have asked me why it is that Nantwich hasn't got its own mayor because they know other places have."
June Garner and Jean Hallam were both concerned that changing the title from chairman to mayor would not be a good move.
Mrs Garner said: "We have never had a mayor in Nantwich, since the local government reorganisation we have had a chairman. I feel we should stay with tradition."
Mrs Hallam added: "I think the Chairman of the Town Council is very distinguished. When I was chairman I was treated with great respect.
"We are not being treated as second rate citizens. I was very proud to be chairman."
What do you think? Would you like to see a Town Mayor of Nantwich or do you prefer the traditional title of Chairman of the Town Council?
