SUNDAY opening has been ruled out by the town's traders.

Their bid for a business boost has been switched to Wednesdays, traditionally set aside for half day closing.

"We are now hoping to persuade shopkeepers who are not taking advantage of growing mid-week trade to join the rest of us. Wednesday is a very busy day. Just how busy, we hope to prove in a survey that we can use as a lever in getting the traditionalists to change their mind," said Business Forum Chairman, David Hogg.

Mr Hogg who owns the Grapevine gift shop in Pepper Street, has been leading the pro-Sunday brigade.

He is disappointed that he and his supporters have failed to convince fellow traders that an extended weekend would be good for business and the town's imdage as a tourist attraction.

But the majority of Business Forum members have agreed that, as Nantwich comprises mainly of proprietor run businesses, Sunday opening is probably not feasible. They have decided that a day of rest is needed.

A few shops will be opening this coming Sunday when the town will be welcoming visitors to the Folk Festival.

"Even on these special weekends it's difficult to drum up support for seven days a week opening. Unfortunately Sunday trading has even been ruled out as a general policy for the build up to Christmas even though Crewe traders will be opening throughout November and December," Mr Hogg added.

Traders will be giving their Christmas trade a boost with a special festive programme that includes a themed lighting scheme for the town centre. As part of the on-going Town Action Plan a Christmas marketing image will be professionally developed and workshops arranged.
