PETER Woods notched two penalties in the first-half. After the break Birchfield increased their lead. Nick Preston powered over for Woods to convert. Carl Byrne scored from the back of a lineout. Then Darren Pitt scored under the posts, converted by Pete Woods. Woods then collected a Dean Handley chip through the race fully 75 yards to score in the corner.
Birchfield won as a result of forward domination and the backs ability to capitalise that. Southport were considered to be one of the favourites for promotion and it was an excellent start by Birchfield after gaining promotion last year.
Howeve, the club is still looking for new players and would welcome anyone turning up for training on Mondays and Thursdays at 7pm.
Birchfield 2nd X11 were beaten at Southport by 13 to 3.opponents.
