AFTER two league games in a weekend, Alvanley gained promotion into next year's newly formed Division Two. Starting the weekend in second spot, only one point ahead of Cheadle in third, a good performance was required in both games to secure the promotion spot behind Oulton Park who had already been confirmed as champions.
The Saturday fixture away to Tarporley was completely washed out despite the efforts of both sides to make the ground play-offs. Cheadle managed to pick up seven points in the game which put them one point ahead of Alvanley who had picked up five in the abandoned game.
On to Sunday were Winnington Park were the visiting side. On a damp track Park won the toss and decided to field. Then the home side openers, Ingram and Charle, provided a solid start at a quick rate which enabled the following batsman to get on with scoring. Charles departed in the 14th over with the score on 43 leaving Ingram to drop anchor, whilst first Senior, and then Fisher came in to hit the ball to all parts of the ground. Senior departed for 23 whilst Fisher scored 27 at more than a run per ball including a towering six. A mini collapse meant that the side were bowled out in 49 overs for 174.
Parks reply got off to a bad start when their opener Leech was caught behind, mishooking off the second ball of the innings. Senior weighed in with an early wicket and then it was down to the spin partnership of Fisher and Elviss. Fisher picked up three wickets but it was Elviss who came back from the dead and put some life into his old bones with a return of five for 11 off 14 overs.
Park were all out for 91 which was aided by some superb close fielding with nine of the 10 wickets falling to catchers.
Finally, thanks goes to Tattenhall who soundly beat Cheadle to help in Alvanley's position push!
