A FORMER policeman has been refused permission to extend his taxi business.
Robert Horton, who left the force because of injuries, had hoped to operate a second private hire car from his home in Grebe Close.
But councillors last week refused his plans, arguing they were unneighbourly.
"I have received several complaints against this application - none in support of it," said Clr Wilson Hamman.
But in a letter to the Knutsford Guardian, a neighbour of the Hortons said she had no objections to the family business.
She said the taxi drivers offered 'old-fashioned values' and were polite and smartly dressed.
"This is an honest man earning an honest living despite objections from some local residents," she said.
The highways department had no objections to the proposals.
But the environmental health officer said another car would increase noise and disturbance in the cul-de-sac.
"It is important that a limit is imposed to protect the amenities of residential areas," said the officer.
"There is concern that if approved, this proposal would set an unfortunate precedent."
Clr Jan Verney accepted the council officer's concerns, but added: "Where is the man supposed to keep his cars?"
Last week Mr Horton, 39, said he would not appeal against the planners' decision.
"I find it very disappointing that I can't provide a good class service the people of Knutsford should expect," he said.
"All I am asking for is a second car which I would park on my drive."
