THOUSANDS of people all over the world have been cured of all sorts of ailments - thanks to a gifted lady working in a tiny aromatherapy shop in Runcorn.

Shirley Johnson only discovered her 'healing hands' when she was gravely ill.

"I had an overactive thyroid," recalled Runcorn-born Shirley. "I used lavender oil and it helped me to relax. I was amazed at how effective it was and couldn't understand how it was happening. I had to find out more."

What started as a hobby through her own illness 19 years ago, has now become a full-time vocation.

"My idea was to learn about herbs and oils from the beginning of time," said self-taught Shirley.

"I have studied the chemical properties of each oil. I know exactly what they are capable of. I won't bring any oils in here unless I know about them."

Shirley started off working from home and moved into her first tiny shop in Regent Street exactly 10 years ago. As word of her successful treatments grew, she was forced to move across the road to larger premises.

"It doesn't matter how big or small your problem, I am here to help," she said.

"People come here because they trust me. They know I will not give them anything they do not need. I never diagnose. This is complimentary medicine, not alternative medicine.

"I don't tread on anyone's toes. I would never take anyone's medicine away. I am not a doctor but often, when people are told there is nothing more that can be done for them, that's where I step in."

Shirley has successfully treated various complaints and conditions ranging from eczema, chest and skin problems to arthritis, asthma and head lice.

Her care and attention is not restricted to adults and children - surprisingly, it even extends to animals. She has cured dogs, cats and even horses!

Photographs of successfully treated animals line the walls of her shop.

A big book, jammed full of appreciative letters and comments from patients she has helped over the years lies on the counter.

"I am a lifeline to a lot of people," said Shirley. "They can ring me at home if they want to - often people get suicidal.

"I don't care what is wrong with you, I will help."

Shirley starts work every day at 7.30am to make all her own creams and oils.

She says she has been surrounded by "old remedies" ever since she was a child.

"My mother, Mrs Doris Japp, who still lives in Leinster Street, used to take us to a herbalist in Egerton Street called Malcolm Jones."

Shirley says she feels "very privileged" to have been given such a precious gift and is delighted when people come back to say her remedy has worked.
