Widnes Schools RLA

NASUWT Schools U11 Competition

Widnes Schools u11s 30

Oldham Schools u11s 14

TWO wins out of two for the Widnes Schools under 11 Town Team, but once again they achieved their victory without ever playing to their full potential.

However, it is difficult to criticise such a decisive victory in only their second outing of the season.

This was in fact a very entertaining game of rugby league football, with the skill level of both sides at a very high standard, and a joy to watch.

All but one of the Widnes tries was scored wide out for the second match in succession, so it is obvious that boys are playing entertaining, flowing rugby.

The first-half was full of errors with many of the Widnes players guilty of basic mistakes, and a rather lethargic attitude with the ball in their hands.

Having said that the Widnes boys scored tries of the highest order, with excellent handling and support play enabling the blistering pace of Andrew Riley (2) and Dennis Simcock to put points on the board.

In the second-half, a more settled approach, and a more disciplined defence provided the platform for Andrew Riley to complete his hat-trick and Dayne Donoghue to also cross for two well-taken tries.

One of these tries was made by astute blind-side play from Adam Kelly, who then repeated the trick for the excellent Shaun McDermott to score in the corner.

However, mention must be made of Andrew Riley's hat-trick try, it truly was the try of the match, made by a classic stand-off break from Dale Bloomfield, to enable Andrew to complete the score in style.

Pack leader and vice captain, Michael Ostick, was head and shoulders above any other forward on the field.
