GREG JOHNSON triumphed emphatically in the Everite Cup, the blue riband event of finals day at Widnes Golf Club on Sunday.

The former Colts champion proved himself supreme in the annual knockout event which is played throughout the summer over the Highfield Road course and reaches its finale over 36 holes.

Johnson needed only 29 of those holes before closing out his nine and seven victory over Ken Veale, runner-up last year as well.

The damage was done in the morning round, Johnson going into lunch seven up.

Heading the supporting cast on a busy weekend was the Past Captains' Trophy, a fourball better-ball knockout which saw Mervyn Jones and Bob O'Callaghan emerge victorious.

Their final against the pairing of Alan Irving and Laurie Wynne was much tighter, going to the final hole after more than four hours of fluctuating fortunes.

O'Callaghan, one of the club's outstanding veterans, was a double winner, having the previous day partnered Carol Davies to victory in the Dorothy Knight Rosebowl.

The final against Mark Weston and Frances Atherton was even closer, requiring sudden death to bring about a verdict at the first extra hole.

The same scenario developed in the Colt's Final between Gareth Roberts and Ian Hyland.

Scheduled for 36 holes, there was nothing to choose between the two talented youngsters until Roberts shaded the 37th minute to make up for his final defeat a year ago.

Stan Schofield, new to the senior ranks, produced some excellent golf to overcome Sam Patmore in the final of the Veterans' Trophy, while Phyllis Grundy got the better of Carol Davies in the final of the principal ladies event, the Phillips Rosebowl.

The final strokeplay event of the summer season also took place at the weekend when Bob Moss captured the Monthly Medal with a score of 83-22=61.

The conclusion of all the strokeplay events confirmed that the Scratch Prize awarded to the player who records the lowest aggregate gross from two rounds during the season - went to Mark Fraser, whose consistently high form throughout the year has brought his handicap down to four.
