Widnes Albion Bulls 24
Rylands 10
A WIN for the Albion even though they gave a stuttering performance in the first-half.
Falling behind to an early Rylands penalty they took the lead when Andy Benson crashed over and a Chris Fenlon penalty stretched the lead.
Shortly after a break by captain Andy Friar saw Tony Mahar race under the posts, Fenlon adding the extras for a 12-2 lead.
A bit of complacency set in and too many penalties were conceded, two of them converted to cut the lead to 12-6 at the interval.
The second-half was scoreless until the 25th minute when Chris Bibby forced his way over direct from a play-the-ball.
Strong running by Wayne Swindley and Mick Donnelly paved the way for Tony Mahar to jink his way over under the posts for a converted try and a 22-6 lead.
With 15 minutes to go the Albion were tackling everything, well led by Ste Lightfoot, and Friar, but the visitors reduced the arrears with a corner-flag try before a late Fenlon penalty sealed the win for the Albion.
The Bulls are away at Portico Panthers for a vital league game, kick-off 2.30pm.
