North West Counties Division One
Widnes Albert 10
Roose Pioneers 24
WIDNES Albert's poor start continued when they went down at home with a disappointing performance against Roose Pioneers of Cumbria.
It was the visitors who took the lead with a penalty and it was soon extended with a converted try next to the posts.
At 8-0 down the Albert rallied well and took the play well into the Cumbrian's half and excellent handling resulted in a fine try for Tim Leech.
Within minutes a penalty put the Albert back on attack and a good passage of play resulted in another try for the Albert.
Dave Yeomans converted to give the Albert a 10-8 half-time lead.
Roose started the second-half well and a good break and good backing up saw them score a fine converted try giving them a 14-10 lead.
The Albert had the bulk of the possession but poor handling saw too much ball go to ground.
On one attack the Albert lost the ball just yards from the Cumbrian's line. This was collected by their opponents who went the length of the field to score a try.
Again the ball was lost on the Roose line and a quick play-the-ball saw them go the length of the field before the Albert defence could recognize.
The conversion wrapped up the scoring with the visitors running out victors by 24-10.
The Albert were well served in the forwards by Mark Ryan and Ste Hankin while Neil Mellor was the pick of the backs.
This week the Albert travel to Higginshaw in Oldham. All players are asked to meet at the Albert at 12.30pm with the coach leaving at 12.45pm.
