MARSHFIELD Bank Residents Association is to start building a new community centre after winning a £250,000 National Lottery grant.

The grant, which is the largest of its kind in the north west, will be presented to the association at a ceremony in Crewe council chambers, Municipal Buildings, on Wednesday.

Association chairperson Yvonne Partridge said the new centre would cater for all residents west of Merrill's Bridge.

"I am delighted that at long last the needs of our community will be provided for," she said.

"When the doors finally open, hopefully about Christmas time, the young and the not so young will find the centre of great benefit.

"With the help of my extremely hard working committee at long last we all will be able to see the fruition of our work."

Wednesday's proceedings will commence at 7pm with a "West End Revisited" presentation by Councillor Howard Curran.

"Being one of the councillors for the area I was thrilled to be asked to give this nostalgic talk and to show once again that it's not all bad in the West End," he said.

"I hope to be able on the night to indicate how important this area was in Crewe's development. In fact, to go as far as to say no other area and its people have had such an impact on Crewe's evolution.

"I will be showing many interesting views to fully support my belief and to echo the words of the Crewe Mayor of 1925-6, Ezra Nixon, 'The West End is the best end.'"

Tickets for the evening were by invitation only but a small number of tickets are still available for Councillor Curran's talk from Mrs Partridge on 01270 216538.
