A MEMORIAL fund has been set up as a tribute to a dedicated health worker who died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage.
Kate Piela, mother of two-year-old twin boys, was a health promotion specialist for schools and young people, employed by Warrington Community Health Care NHS Trust. She was a familiar face to staff in Warrington's schools and was renowned for her work on anti-bullying projects.
Kate collapsed at work on Thursday, August 27. She was rushed to hospital where medics diagnosed a brain haemorrhage, but she tragically died the following day. She was only 40 years old.
Her colleague, health promotion manager Debbie Jackson, said: "Kate's death came as a terrible shock to us all and she is greatly missed.
"She had complained of headaches for a couple of weeks, but nothing too drastic. Then she suddenly collapsed at work and was in a deep coma within half an hour. It was very distressing.
"As friends we will miss her 'tongue in cheek' approach to life. She was a trusted confidante. As colleagues, the team wants to acknowledge her professionalism. She was determined to improve the health and welfare of young people."
In tribute to Kate, the 'Kate Piela Memorial Fund for Young People' has been set up. Groups and organisations which have worked hard to promote good health for young people will be able to apply for grants. Anyone wishing to make a donation should make cheques payable to Warrington Community Health Care NHS Trust and send them to the Health Promotion Service, Phoenix House, Victoria Trading Centre, Spring Street, Widnes, WA8 0NL.
