A WINSFORD golfing nut couldn't believe his luck at the last hole of a major British tournament.

He was shocked and amazed when top British golfer Ian Woosnam approached him after playing his final shot and gave him one of his clubs.

Peter Winstanley, of Ribble Avenue, Wharton, was a spectator on the final day of the 'One to One' British Masters at the Forest of Arden, Warwickshire, last week.

He and his friend Kev Gordon, also from Winsford, had been following different players around the course and had eventually made their way to the 18th to see all the top names come in.

Peter recalled: "Ian Woosnam had just played his first shot onto the green and he hit a 30ft putt which hit the rim of the hole and bobbled out.

"He casually knocked the ball in the hole, walked over to the crowd and pushed the putter into my hand - I couldn't believe it!

"Top golfers often hand stuff out to the crowd at the end of a round, but it's usually their hats, balls or gloves."

Peter, a keen golfer with a 12 handicap, has shown the putter to some of his friends at his local pub but they don't believe it is genuine and have joked that he bought it at a car boot sale.

He was hoping to record the tournament from the television to prove his sceptics wrong but only highlights have been televised since the event.

Peter now intends to write to the famous golfer to thank him for his generosity and to find out the history of the Odyssey Rossie II putter.

"I would like to know if he has won any tournaments with it and most of all whether it has seen any Ryder Cup action," Peter said.

The Forest of Arden tournament was eventually won by Europe's top golfer, Colin Montgomerie, who came in at seven under par.

However, Woosnam did have some joy, breaking a course record by completing nine holes in just 28 shots.
