VETERAN athlete Mike Weedall became a record breaker at the weekend - and at the age of 43 feels he is getting better and better.
On Sunday, the Winsford runner won the prestigious Sandstone Trail fell race, completing the 16.5-mile run a minute faster than any other veteran had before, breaking a 15-year record held by former Great Britain Olympic runner Geoff Norman.
It was almost like a training run for Mike. He had a three-minute lead after only six miles, stretching to four minutes by the end.
"I knew I had done a good time and must have been close to the veterans' record but didn't know I had broken it until after the finish," said Mike.
"I'm running better now than ever before because of the changes in my training. I used to do a lot of high mileage but now do a lot of track work, which means better quality.
"I'm on form at the moment and confidence is sky high."
Mike dons the gold vest of Cheshire this weekend when he runs in a 10-mile county road race at Flint.
He is a member of Vale Royal Atletics Club, who were also represented in Sunday's race by Steve Wood, David Astbury, John Hateley, Susan Wood - who finished third in the ladies' race - and Maggie Hateley.
The club has now switched to winter training at Rudheath High School on Tuesdays, starting at 7.30pm.
