The 46-year-old made the announcement after retaining the European police veterans title with brother Alec and winning the singles event for the first time in Montpellier last week.

"I've had a really good life in table tennis, but there comes a time when you've got to move on," he said.

Ian has won almost every veterans' honour the sport has to offer, including European, British and County titles and was part of the Britain trio which came fifth in last year's World Championships.

"It was a very long year last year," he admitted. "I'm actually not going to play a lot this year - I want to concentrate more on my golf."
