CHILDREN'S safety could be put in danger by moves by create a two-way system near a main road, it was claimed this week.
The warning came from councillor Judith Thwaite, who is fighting plans to scrap the one-way system in Nursery Lane, Congleton.
Under the moves a 30-metre stetch of Nursery Lane from its junction with Bromley Road would become two-way.
"The whole length of Nursery Lane should remain one-way on safety grounds,'' said Mrs Thwaite.
"If it becomes two-way near its junction with Bromley Road it won't be long before a child is plastered across the bonnet of a car coming out of the lane.
"Children go to school along Bromley Road, and often run ahead of their parents.
"They are not used to cars coming out of Nursery Lane onto Bromley Road, and cars have to come right out into the road to see before turning out.''
Planning permission was given for flats near the junction of both roads, and the borough council decided to allow two-way access to the site and to prevent abuse of the one-way system.
The developer was bound by an agreement to fund the alteration to the one-way system, widen the road and provide a footpath.
Councillors are to visit Nursery Lane before taking a decision on the proposed two-way initiative.
