Tetley Walker 3
Squires Gate 1
TETLEY Walker turned in a spirited display to knock high flying Squires Gate out of the League Challenge Cup on Saturday.
And this was on the back of a week of disruptions following the resignation of manager Chris Coulson the week before.
Walker will face first division Leek CSOB at Long Lane in the next round on October 24.
Walker, without a win at home so far and led by the temporary management duo of Jimmy Drewery and Ian Street, played with a commitment and passion which had been missing too often this season.
Walker started brightly and should have taken the lead in the ninth minute but Stuart Clay's shot was cleared off the line and Drewery hit the rebound against the crossbar.
Squires took the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute. Rick Shaw led the break down the right and whipped in a low cross which was turned past goalkeeper Neil McCormack by Russell Headley.
Midfielder Steve Hunt put Walker back in the hunt on the stroke of half-time, when he reacted first to score as a corner dropped into the six yard area.
Walker hit the front five minutes after the break when Simon Pickett raced on to a Lee Webster through ball and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing 'keeper.
Walker made the game safe after 60 minutes. A corner was headed on to the bar by Hunt. The rebound fell to Justin Farrelly, who capped his man of the match display with a well struck goal.
Team: McCormack, Sanson, Webster, Roberts, Hunt, Maher, Farrelly, Street, Clay, Pickett, Drewery. Sub: Turner.
The previous Tuesday Walker drew 1-1 at Oldham Town. Stuart Clay scored.
Tomorrow, Saturday, Tetley will attempt to move up the North Western Trains League Division Two table when they play host to Curzon Ashton, kick-off 3pm.
Walker's reserves, who beat Chorlton 3-2 on Saturday, travel to Crewe in Mid-Cheshire League Division Two.
