SHOPPERS were the target of a dramatic demonstration by Warrington's firefighters to highlight the danger of chip pan fires.
As part of Fire Safety Week, the crews staged an awareness event at the B&Q warehouse in Winwick. The main feature was their chip pan display which shows the right and the wrong way to extinguish the flames if the pan does catch fire and what the affects would be if water was thrown on to the flames.
The fire brigade offers the following advice to those using chip pans:
Never fill the pan more than half full with oil.
Never leave the pan unattended.
Turn the heat off if the oil gives off smoke.
If it does catch fire, do not move the pan.
Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so.
Smother the flames with a damp towel.
Never throw water on to the fire.
The theme of fire safety week was 'Everything Burns.' Firefighters from Warrington's three fire stations have been out and about in schools, elderly people's homes and businesses to teach the public about fire safety.
