Steam and power pipes running between Brunner Mond's Winnington and Lostock sites will go right through the heart of Furey Wood at the end of Beswicks Road.
Schoolchildren and wildlife volunteers helped move small trees and collect seeds from trees too big to be moved before replanting them in the future.
"Planting trees is just one way of taking responsibility for our environment," said Virginia Hunt, from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
