But county council engineers feel that some of the measures were so successful, they should be kept in place.

From yesterday morning, Tuesday, the following changes are in place:

You can now turn RIGHT into London Road and Queen Street from the Castle end of Chester Way, as before.

Dane Street, by the Regal Cinema, will again become two-way as far as the Friendly Floatel. But the junction with The Bull Ring remains one-way only.

The timings on ALL the town centre traffic lights will change to allow a smoother flow of traffic. This includes the lights at Castle Hill, London Road, Watling Street and Crum Hill.

All 'no left turn' signs will be removed from the end of Dane Street.

The temporary signs in the town centre were covered up during yesterday morning. They will eventually be removed, as will all the signs on the Northwich bypass which warned of the closure.

But Cheshire County Council's traffic and transport manager, Arthur Shapcott, believes that Dane Street might revert to a one-way system in the future.

"The system proved very successful, and was certainly agreeable to bus drivers, who had to manoeuvre double-deckers round tight corners there without it," said Mr Shapcott.

"We are looking into the possibility of reinstating the one-way system at a later date."
