A MAN who gave his brother's name when he was stopped for drink driving has been jailed for 28 days.

Andrew Johnson, 24, of Milton Street, Widnes had originally been ordered to do 200 hours community service but repeatedly failed to turn up to do the work, Warrington Crown Court was told on Monday.

Johnson admitted breaching the community service order.

Julian Shaw, prosecuting, said Johnson gave a positive breath test when he was stopped in July 1996.

He gave his brother's name, a false date of birth but the correct address.

He was bailed to appear before magistrates but failed to turn up.

Eventually he was arrested 18 months later and admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He said he gave a false name because he was subject to a curfew at the time.

He was ordered to do community service but only completed 54 out of 200 hours.

Robert Dudley, defending, said his client had been working in the Isle Of Man and had adopted an "ostrich-like" attitude, trying to bury himself.

He had not given the community service work sufficient priority but now realised he had made a grave mistake.
