A MAJOR campaign aimed at encouraging people to compost their garden waste is being launched by the borough council.

For one day only on Sunday, October 18, residents will be able to buy a compost bin at one third of the normal price.

The bins, which hold 45 gallons and are guaranteed for 10 years, take all kinds of household rubbish including vegetable peelings, plants, grass and egg shells.

The only items not suitable include meat, cat and dog litter and not many woody objects.

Senior Refuse Officer, Dee Darwin, said: "We collect 41,000 tonnes of household waste every year.

"It has to be disposed of in landfill sites and that can be expensive. Up to 30 per cent of household waste is organic and suitable for composting.

"It will save money, mean less landfill sites are needed and therefore protect the countryside and of course it is ideal for your garden."

The bins will be sold at Christchurch car park, Crewe, between 11am and 3pm and will cost £10 in comparison with their normal price of £29.95.
