WIDNES Sixth Form College were runaway winners of the Golf Foundation Regional qualifier, a scratch competition which attracted 15 teams of three to Widnes Golf Club.
Led by Childwall's Roger Murphy, a four-handicapper who went round the par-69 course in 74, the local team posted an excellent aggregate score of 227 to finish 20 shots clear of Wirral Grammar with Ashton-Under-Lyne a further four shots adrift.
The Sixth Form's superb total was completed by a score of 77 by Runcorn's Shaun Bannon and a 76 by Ian Ratcliffe, who is junior captain at Widnes. The team now go on to the national final to be staged at a Midlands venue in March.
