DISRUPTIONS to train services between Warrington and Manchester last weekend were due to essential work on a bridge and embankment, say Railtrack.
Passengers travelling between Warrington Central and Manchester had to catch special buses to and from Newton le Willows, doubling travelling times for commuters.
A bridge was removed and a new polystyrene embankment was fitted at Irlam Bridge. The disruptions lasted from 12.01am on Friday to 4am on Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for Railtrack said: "The embankment is the first of its kind in England. It was a successful job and the project was finished two hours earlier than expected. Buses were put on and an alternative train link was provided by North West Trains.
"No further work is expected at this time but if there is we will let the public know as soon as possible. We'd like to offer our apologies to the travelling public. The work was a matter of urgency and it had to be done," she said.
