Mond Rangers Reserves 2 New Brighton 3

MOND Rangers Reserves eventually lost to New Brighton when they were awarded a controversial penalty - by one of their own officials!

Runcorn coach Glyn Thornhill became the man in black when the original match referee pulled up with a hamstring.

With the game evenly poised at two-apiece, and not wanting it to be abandoned, qualified ref Glyn stepped in to save the day.

But after giving New Brighton a helping hand he was later sent to Coventry by his own players.

Glyn spotted Mond's Martin Daly elbow the ball in the area and promptly awarded New Brighton a penalty, despite appeals from his own club.

Glyn said: "I saw it, so I blew".

Rod Looker, the Mond manager was not happy with Glyn's alertness saying: "The match referee would possibly not have spotted the incident, it happened so quickly I didn't see it!"

Earlier in the first-half Smith gave Mond the lead when he went round the keeper to walk the ball home in the 17th minute.

An unusual error by centre-back Morgan allowed the visitors a shooting opportunity which Penk took full advantage of to equalise in the 31st minute.

Mond attacked in the second-half and were caught when a long ball eluded both Egerton and Morgan allowing Hassells to drive beyond Bate in the Mond goal.

In the 68th minute Hide latched on to a Maxwell pass and slotted the ball into the bottom corner for a deserved equaliser.

Then came that penalty which Tunstall stepped up to score. Mom, Stuart Hide.
