A TERRIFIED man was awoken in the early hours when two men burst into his house, Warrington Crown Court heard.

He was punched, kicked and threatened with a screwdriver, the court was told.

Peter Bennett, 22, of Lockgate East, Runcorn, admitted aggravated burglary and jailed for four years.

Andre McKune, 22, of Chetton Drive, also Runcorn, admitted burglary and was jailed for 30 months.

The pair broke into the house, arousing the occupant.

When he tried to telephone police he was attacked by Bennett who punched and kicked him and threatened with a screwdriver.

"He was terrified for his very life," Judge David Hale said.

The court was told both defendants were of previous good character.

Michael Byrne, defending, said although McKune had not been the prime mover, he was bitterly ashamed because he had let down his family.

He was a man who had done many hours voluntary service for the community.

"Whatever sentence the court passed the condemnation of his family will live with him for the rest of his life," he added.
