Good teaching was a significant factor in the high standards achieved with quality of teaching 'good or better' in four-fifths of the lessons seen, the report said.

In a quarter of lessons the quality was 'very good' and in six per cent of lessons it was 'excellent'.

"High expectations, very good relationships and well organised lessons are significant features of good teaching," said the report.

During its inspection the OFSTED team found English and maths were well above the national average, science was also above the national average.

There is excellent provision for pupils' social development and a very good provision for spiritual, culture and moral development.

The report found the school had made good progress since the last inspection in 1995 - especially in increasing the level of challenge of the more able pupils.

Partnership with parents was another significant strength and the report confirms that parents were well justified in their positive views of the school. Strong corporate management by the headteacher and governing body at the school created a 'clear and shared sense of purpose.'

Janet Groom, head of Comberbach Primary School, said: "We are highly delighted with the report which has highlighted not only the high commitment to our academic achievement but also our commitment to providing excellent social development for our children.

"Our success is down to the strong partnership between staff, children, parents and the governing body who are all highly committed to the pursuit of excellence," she added.
