And police are warning people to be on their guard following a similar incident in Lostock.

Sergeant Andy Smith said: "The incidents are alike - the pensioner being distracted by an offender asking for some buckets of water because there's a 'problem'.

"Elderly people should be extra careful and make sure they check the identity of any callers at their address. Otherwise, don't let them in."

The men who went to Chapel Court are described as white and about 6ft tall. One was in his late 20s and slim, while the other was stocky, with short dark hair and a southern accent. The second man was wearing a green and red bomber jacket.

The week before a 70-year-old pensioner was targeted at Hesketh Drive in Lostock. The burglar was white, in his late 20s and cross-eyed, with brown hair.
