Egerton Estates withdrew their application for planning permission just days before councillors were due to discuss the scheme.

"I think they realised there was never any chance of the plans being accepted because of all the environmental issues," said planning chairman Tony Mazzeo.

Council officers had highlighted a host of problems with the site, including the possibility of subsidence and the loss of protected trees. Yesterday (Tuesday) Clr Mazzeo warned residents, who had objected to the scheme, that the developers would probably be back. Egerton Estates refused to comment.
