THE General Municipal Boilermakers' Trade Union has launched a new Credit Union, which all 3,500 members in the Warrington area and their immediate families will be able to take advantage of.

The scheme gives all 70,000 members, who work in areas such as chemicals, retail, gas and electricity, the opportunity to save and obtain loans at an interest rate of one per cent a month without credit checks and with free insurance.

GMB branch secretary, Les Morgan, said: "People who have no credit rating have been forced to turn to loan sharks when trying to get money to pay for holidays, school uniforms, Christmas etc.

"This is our golden opportunity to get our members away from those who charge extortionate rates of interest and prey on the people who in the past had nowhere else to go."

The first few days of the new scheme have seen in excess of 300 savers joining the Credit Union, while 6,000 are expected within the first 12 months.
