LATE-ditch efforts are being made to preserve a wildlife haven threatened by plans for 1,100 new homes.

Without a late intervention, the Peel Hall site, off Radley Lane, Houghton Green, could become a massive housing estate - to the horror of nature lovers.

The sprawling site has been designated prime housing land by a government inspector and time is running out for campaigners aiming to preserve the area for posterity.

The inspector ruled the area, the target of previous unsuccessful housing bids, was "featureless" and has released it for potential development in Warrington's Local Plan.

But protesters believe the site, used by Lymm Ornithological Society for nature walks, is home to two protected species, the greater crested newt and small-eared owl.

If the blueprints are given the go-ahead Gordon and Elsie Naylor, of Radley Cottage, will be surrounded by houses.

Elsie told the GUARDIAN: "There will be no wildlife, no walkers, just a massive housing estate."

More than 3,000 trees have been planted in the area by Winwick parish council, which has developed a network of wheelchair-friendly paths. Added Gordon Naylor: "This is already one of the most densely populated areas in Warrington and this will make the situation worse."

New access roads, catering for 2,000 car journeys each day, will run through playing fields, claim objectors, also creating more traffic along the A49 Winwick Link Road.

Peel Hall borders the Greenwood and Grasmere estates and is seen by many as an important green refuge in the heart of urban Warrington.

Alida McDonald, from Greenwood Crescent, said: "It is the only bit of open land we have got left. People walk their dogs and children go there to play."

Campaigners have enlisted the support of Lord Hoyle, Warrington North MP Helen Jones and Winwick parish council. Poplars and Padgate councillors Darren Pilling and John Kerr Brown are also on the case.

Hundreds of letters have been posted to Mrs Jones expressing outrage at the bid and the MP is backing objectors.

"This is the last green open space in the area and a valuable facility for residents," said Mrs Jones.

People wishing to make their views known can contact the MP at her office at 67 Bewsey Street, Warrington, WA2 7JQ.
