DETECTIVES are warning golfers to beware if they are offered cut-price clubs after a raid on a sports store.

Burglars escaped with high quality golf equipment worth more than £17,000 after launching a dawn raid at Drive Time in Slutchers Lane. It appears the intruders knew exactly what they were aiming for - stealing only top-of-the-range Calloway irons and woods.

Detective Constable Richard Langford said: "If anyone is approached with new clubs up for sale at unusually cheap prices, then they should contact us."

The burglars forced rear shutters at the premises and smashed their way through a glass partition to get into the golf shop, grabbing clubs and four or five golf bags.

Police believe the gang then probably escaped on foot along a footbridge to Eastford Road, eventually ending up on Chester Road, Lower Walton.

They are seeking the public's help. Any witnesses to the incident, at 6am on Monday, are urged to call DC Langford on 01244 613835 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
