Staff and teenagers want to revamp the centre, on Winnington Lane - and even add a homework room.

But first they are appealing for donations and covenants to turn their dreams into a reality.

Northwich and District Youth Centre was set up in 1962 and is used by young people from all walks of life and social backgrounds.

It has a strong membership of between 40 and 45, attending the senior club on most nights, and 60 to 75 on the junior club evening.

Youngsters enjoy everything from table tennis, pool, television, hair dressing and a beauty salon, to five-a-side soccer and basketball.

They also get the chance to take part in orienteering, mountain climbing and walking.

"It's great. I like to meet my friends and have a laugh. There's nothing in Barnton so I come along here," said Hayley Allen, 15, of Blackcroft Avenue, Barnton.

The centre, which is an independent charity run by a volunteer management committee, survives on a small grant from Vale Royal Borough Council and staffing costs from Cheshire County Council.

But the committee is keen to set up a homework room, where those who cannot afford a computer can have access to one.

There are also hopes to extend and refurbish other parts of the building.

Facilities it already has include a gymnasium, three meeting rooms, a hairdressing and beauty salon, general club area, and coffee and soft drinks bar with a kitchen.

There is one full time officer, Mike Wadkin, and three part time workers.
