A FIVE-YEAR-OLD child has become the latest victim of the killer brain disease meningitis, it was revealed this week.

A reception class pupil at Moorfield county primary school in Widnes is being treated for the disease.

Headteacher Joyce Caunce said: "I understand that the case is still unconfirmed but I have written to all parents this week to inform them of the situation and this includes advice from North Cheshire Health about the illness."

There have been three cases of reported meningococcal disease involving Widnes residents since the end of December, North Cheshire Health confirmed this week.

These include a 20-year-old man, a 25-year-old man and a five-year-old child.

Only one of these cases so far has been confirmed.

Paul Caffrey, the 12-year-old SS Peter and Paul schoolboy who died from meningitis this week is not included in these figures as he lived in Speke.

There have been a further 12 cases in Runcorn.

A spokesman for North Cheshire Health said: "We reiterate the message to all parents to remain vigilant at this time of year when meningococcal disease is more common.

"The symptoms may present as a high temperature or fever. The patient may also experience headaches, vomiting, neck stiffness, aversion to bright light and a rash that does not disappear on pressure.

"The disease can be very rapid in onset and if there is concern, medical advice should be sought from a GP."
