Divisional commissioner Ronnie Ross said parents, whose daughters attend 1st Toft Guides, had known about the group's leadership problems for weeks but no one had offered to help.

"We are just seen as a baby-sitting service and we are finding that parents don't want to look after other people's children," said Mrs Ross, who works at Alstom.

Four Guide units currently meet in Knutsford.

But in the past groups have had to be amalgamated when leaders couldn't be found.

"We can't keep doing this and there is a problem because the Brownies, who feed into the Guide unit, won't have anywhere to go if it closes," said Mrs Ross.

Last night (Tuesday) Mrs Ross, who has been involved in the Guide movement for 23 years, was due to appeal to parents.

"I realise most of them have jobs, but said previous leaders have managed to combine the two," she said.

"The problem is total apathy from parents. They don't get involved, but encourage their children to go to Guides."

1st Toft Guides meet Tuesday nights at Manor Park Scout Hut. A Guide leader can be anyone under 65 and they will receive special training for free.

If you can help call Mrs Ross on 652510.
