SCORES of Congleton residents have joined forces to oppose a housing scheme they claim would become a focus for "civil disorder."
The warning came from residents campaigning against plans by Dane Housing to build 23 houses and flats on land between Lowe Avenue and Canal Street.
The scheme comprises seven two-bed and 10 three-bed houses, six one-bed flats and a six-bed special needs house.
Residents signed two petitions containing 97 signatures opposing the housing proposals, as well sending in 10 letters to the borough council.
They claimed the flats would become "a focal point for civil disorder," which would affect the quality of life of people living nearby and devalue their house prices.
They are also concerned about the proposed access to the site, stressing that New Street is already congested from children being dropped off and picked up at Daven Primary School.
Residents claimed the absence of a play area in the housing scheme would lead to children playing in the road, and no thought had been given to the impact of the development on the surrounding area.
Borough planning chief Geoff Allen recommended the scheme should be approved, but councillors agreed this week to take a look at the site before making a decision.
